Lasse Holm and Lotta Engberg sing a duet for the planet

64-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter Lasse Holm and 1987 Swedish Eurovision Song Contest representative Lotta Engberg are to record a song together to draw attention to global warming.

Lasse has not recorded since 1986, when he sang for Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in Bergen with Monica Törnell, finishing fifth with the song  E’ de’ det här du kalllar kärlek. However when former US vice president Al Gore recently visited Sweden to talk about climate change, Lasse decided to record a more serious song than his usually comical numbers. Det måste gå  (It’s got to go) is a duet with Lotta Engberg, 45, who represented Sweden at the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels, finishing 12th with her catchy number Boogaloo. The promotion of the song will be on Lasse’s Diggiloo tour, beginning on 5th July in Ronneby. As well as singing in 1986, Lasse Holm composed Carola’s first Eurovision entry Främling in 1983 and Sweden’s 1985 song Bra Vibrationer sung by Kikki Danielsson.

He has had a total of 17 entries at the Melodifestivalen, five of which finished as runner-up.

Miguel Linde’s dream to conquer Europe!

The multi talented Spanish composer Miguel Linde who shot to fame during Mision Eurovision back in 2007 with his song Tu voz se apagará is back with a bang! Back in 2007 his song competed in the Spanish Eurovision national final, whilst this year he tried his luck with Eternamente which narrowly missed out to be included in the Spanish Eurovision national final.

Miguel spoke to esctoday.com thus revealing that he is all set to conquer Europe and the Eurovision audience in 2009. The Andalusian composer revealed to us that he is preparing something extraordinary for next year’s Eurovision edition with some well known Spanish and International  composers and artists. “I shall not reveal anything yet, but I’ll be back on the scene with a BANG!”

He went on mention that there will be one too many surprises too, thus mentioning that he’s currently working on several projects with various artists from various countries. “Who knows !I will be surely working on entering a song in Spain, but don’t be surprised if one of my songs competes in Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta , Andorra or Croatia!”

When asked if the songs will be in Spanish  he revealed that he’s working on songs in Portuguese and some other languages. Miguel Linde has been very busy recently working wth a famous Spanish artist and has several projects at hand. To conclude Miguel told us “I’m living a dream and my dream is to conquer Europe with my music! Maybe in 2009 it will come true, maybe Spain? Portugal? Romania? Bulgaria? Malta? or Andorra? The sky is the limit!”

Greece: Mando returns after five years

Mando participated in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest for Greece with Never let you go and placed 17th. Five years later she returns with a brand new album and an entirely different look and sound.

Mando II is the artist’s twelfth album to date, the title symbolising a new beginning after a long break she took after Eurovision. The album contains twelve tracks, among them three by Pegasos, six by Mando herself and two by popular Danish producer Deekay. The song Breathe again is reported to have been submitted to the Greek broadcaster for this year’s local preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest. The album has already received favourable critics in Greece and enjoys quite a lot of airplay.

The official presentation of the album will take place this Wednesday at the Club Bocca in Voula, Athens.

You can listen to samples of the songs from Mando’s new album here and here.

Sweden: Charlotte and Nicola take a break

It seems that the Eurovision stress has been too much for Swedish singer Charlotte Nilsson’s marriage to Italian Nicola Perrelli as the couple announced to the national news service they are taking some time out after 10 years together.

We will never divorce and have never doubted that we will be together forever. Nicola and me are convinced that we will die together”, Charlotte told Aftonbladet . The couple, who met ten years ago and got married in 2003, had been having problems lately due to the artist’s heavy schedule but had always dismissed divorce rumours. Now they jointly announced to the national news service that they will be taking time out of their marriage.

In Belgrade, Charlotte had to face the music alone during the Eurovision final as Nicola was called unexpectedly back to Sweden to take care of business: ” I got a message as soon as I arrived in Belgrade that I had to go back and fill in some papers” he told Aftonbladet, “sounds boring but that’s the way it is.” Charlotte seemed to be taking the situation calmly at least for the press: “Rotten!” she said, “but what can you do about it?” she stated stoically.

San Marino: ” We have good hopes to return”

San Marino’s first attempt at the Eurovision Song cannot be called a success exactly with Miodio finishing last in the first semi final but the Sammarinese broadcaster will be evaluating the situation and will be announcing their final decision before the end of this year.

Dima Bilan visited the tiny European state recently during the Eurovision Winner’s tour and was welcomed by the Minister of Youth. During the meeting the Sammarinese Minister revealed that no decision has been made yet on whether the country will return to the Eurovision Song Contest next year: “We have good hopes to return to the Eurovision Song Contest,” the Minister said. “San Marino TV will now evaluate their first ever Eurovision Song Contest adventure, and a final decision will be taken before the end of the year.” eurovision.tv reports.

Sweden : 9 Eurovision entries in Top 60

Earlier this week, it was reported that 4 Eurovision entries entered the official sales lists in Sweden - a Euro-Land ! This chart not only counts “physical” records, but also internet downloadings and ringtones.

An article by Dominique Dufaut

Week 23 in the Swedish charts has been published with 5 more Eurovision entries. Sebastien Tellier (France) is now at 4th place, Rodolfo Chikilicuatre (Spain) entered the chart at number 12, the other newcomers being Dima Bilan (Russia) at number 28, Simon Matthew (Denmark) on spot 56, Ani Lorak (Ukraine) on spot 57 and Euroband (Iceland) on spot 59.The two others ones, which entered last week, are : Actually, Maria (Norway, now 20) and Kalomira (Greece, 38).

Charlotte Perelli (Sweden) still charts at number 18, like the Melodifestivalen runner-up, Sanna Nielsen, at number 35. Both ladies have already reached the Golden status.

Another “Eurovision entry” can be found in the Top 60. But this not a song performed in Belgrade… Which one ? The Swedish 2007 entry, The worrying kind, this time performed by Mia Hirasawa. Her cover (and classical) version was shown during the Swedish final.

“Céline” won Eurovision… with a song in English

As reported a couple of months ago, a 90-minute film on Céline Dion’s career, from her childhood to “Titanic”, has been made by TV director Jeff Woolnough. “Céline” has just been released on DVD in France, under the label “M6 Video”.

An article by Dominique Dufaut

Although Céline Dion did not take part in the project and didn’t give her consent (as stated on the booklet), the TV movie is based on the story of her life. The Eurovision part is certainly the most interesting one… for eurofans at least. One particular scene shows “René Angélil” trying to reach American producer and songwriter David Foster by phone, then asking his assistant to reach “the Eurovision director” !!!

Here is the dialogue between “Céline and René” during this special scene:
Céline : Eurovision ?
René : Even Foster can’t ignore you once you win the mother of all contests
Céline : Didn’t Abba win Eurovision a few years ago ?
René : It made them, the same way it will make you
Céline : But it’s not popular here in Québec
René : Maybe no one watches it here, but everyone understands what 600 millions viewers means
Céline : 600 millions viewers ?
René : Mmm
Céline : And what happens if I don’t win ?
René : I don’t see how you can lose !

Then, the couple stands in their hotel room in Dublin, “Céline” wearing a similar outfit to the one made for real back in 1988 and next scene shows her performing on stage, with a big “Eurovision” neon light in her back. Her song seems to be entitled Don’t leave me now… but this is not even an English version of Ne partez pas sans moi!

Nothing is mentioned on the suspense of the voting that year and the next scene sees “Céline”, with the trophy in her hands, climbing the stairs together with “René” and, as the two of them are about to enter his/her own room, they kiss. As reported in the “official biography” of Céline Dion (published in 1998), this 1988 April 30 night seems to have been very important in the performer’s life… not only on an artistic point of view.

No need to tell you the rest of the story. The film is pleasant to watch. Many among Céline’s big fans won’t find some parts credible though. The fact that, even as a child, Céline sang in English is a bit awkward, as we all know the girl (and the teenager) was not fluent in English until Eurovision.

Alexander Bard: I’d love to work with Ani Lorak!

BWO tried their luck again this year for the Eurovision Song Contest placing third after Charlotte Perrelli and Sanna Nielsen in the Melodifestivalen 2008 final. This was their third attempt but they are quite happy about it as Alexander Bard told Martin of Schlager Systems. In the interview, the BWO creator talks about this year’s Europride anthem to be performed by BWO, their feelings about not making it to Belgrade, their favourites (and favourites not!) in this year’s contest and ….. Carola.

Hi Alexander. How did you come to write this year’s official Europride anthem?

We were asked to do the Europride anthem because BWO is of course popular in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe already and Europride, while taking place in Stockholm, will have an Eastern European theme this year. So we couldn’t really resist the offer. It seemed a perfectly natural thing for us to do.

Did you work on the song with co-writers?

The Bells Of Freedom was co-written by me, Martin Rolinski and Anders Hansson. The same team that writes most of BWO’s songs. There was really no reason why we would write the Europride anthem differently from the way we write all other BWO songs. All we were concerned with was to write an all-inclusive pop anthem but with a slight political touch. The wedding bells in the chorus section stand for the political aspect.

The song is up-tempo and full of energy. How important is energy to the music of BWO?

We love pop, pure pop! And pop includes both energetic up-tempo songs and gorgeous ballads. We just do our best to write the very best songs we can come up with. Songwriting is always at the center of everything BWO do.

BWO will be headlining at Europride in Stockholm! What can we expect from the performance?

A full-on live performance. We’re proud to perform on the same stage as our friends Alcazar who will also perform together with us on the stage of G-A-Y in London four weeks earlier at London Pride.

Were BWO disappointed not to make it to Eurovision this year?

No, not at all. It’s actually a kind of luxury, to perform at Melodifestivalen, place third as the edgiest and freshest entry, have a massive and now also an international hit single with Lay Your Love On Me, and then hear from everybody afterwards that “Sweden should have sent BWO instead of Charlotte to Eurovision“. It feels quite good, to be honest about it.

You told us in Stockholm that ‘Lay Your Love on Me’ had outsold Perrelli’s ‘Hero’ on the day of MF08 final, that must have felt good!

We don’t actually compare our songs that way. Both Charlotte, Sanna and BWO were winners at this year’s Melodifestivalen in the sense that we were the Top 3 at Globen at the MF finals and then all had massive hit singles and albums afterwards. Our other common denominator is of course that Bobby Ljunggren co-wrote all three songs (!) Bobby is really a hero.

Cheeky question - was it true you guys never got any ‘good luck’ flowers from Carola at the MF final?

It’s hardly a secret that BWO and Carola dislike each other. A lot. But I absolutely love and adore Ani Lorak from Ukraine. Ani has all the charisma and modern sexiness that Carola and Charlotte lack. I would love to work with Ani one day. She has both the charisma and the amazing voice I like in a good performer.

Did you get a chance to watch Eurovision this year? Any favourites?

Ani Lorak, of course, Are you kidding? She blew all the others away. I also liked Switzerland’s song but the guy who sang it came across as being so pale and insecure while performing that he blew it all already at the sem-finals. There was no charm there, for sure. Martin and Marina loved Sebastien Tellier from France, But that’s of course because Tellier does modern and cool electro and not some dated old eurovision fodder. But God, we LOATHED the German and UK entries. They were sooo bad! In every aspect! Why can’t the UK and Germany send something better? Maybe BWO could help them out?

It’s such a shame you didn’t get to compete as you would have gained a lot of votes as you are hugely popular in easter Europe, aren’t you?

I suppose that’s true. It certainly didn’t hurt Dima Bilan that he is already a major star in lots of Eastern European countries.

Are you playing any UK dates soon?

Yes, of course, BWO and Alcazar will perform live together at G-A-Y in London on July 5. And BBC Radio 2 are already playing “Lay Your Love On Me”, set for UK release at the end of July. Life could be a lot worse.

Germany: Will participate in Eurovision 2009

German Broadcaster NDR have announced on its official website that Germany will participate in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. JESC - Minor format changes introduced

At the Heads of Delegation meeting of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, currently taking place in sunny Cyprus, the Steering Group introduced several minor changes in the format of the event. CyBC also revealed the design of the stage for this year’s contest.

The maximum amount of children on stage at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest has been reduced to six instead of eight, just like at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Steering Group of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest also decided to give the back-up jury a 50% say in the outcome of the competition. According to the rules of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the back-up jury has to be a diverse group of people, and should include children.

The 2008 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, which is the 6th running, will take place on the 22nd of November in Lemesos, Cyprus. The show will be hosted by Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, the presenters are unknown yet. The Host Broadcaster did reveal that the show will be hosted by a man and a woman, in the roles of Adonis and Aphrodite.

The second Heads of Delegation meeting, which also marks the deadline to officially enter songs, takes place on the 13th and 14th of October. The running order will be drawn during the October meeting as well.

France : Annual Eurovision parody on Monday, July 7

The 16th edition of “EuroVartoVision” will take place on Monday July 7, in the Parisian theater Le Trianon (tube station “Anvers”). Sixty artists as well as amateurs will take the stage to deliver their own, funny performance of popular Eurovision tunes.

This parody of the Eurovision Song Contest was created by showman Vartoche, hence the name of it. All participants, people working in the show business but amateurs too, choose a Eurovision song - in its original language - and perform it in a funny way. All in all, around 60 persons come on stage to make 20 parodies, with a 10-members real orchestra (no PBO’s !).

The show is presented by Olga and Gertrüd every year and juries consist of artists invited by Vartoche. We usually see about 5-6 Eurovision participants as well as people from the media business. The voting procedure is, of course, the same one than for Eurovision itself, with winners invited to perform their act again. Last year, Germany won, with a funny version of Marcel (Germany 1963 by Heidi Brühl). Two of the OGAE France’s members were actually part of the victorious group. So, if you’re having your holidays at this moment in Paris, you need to experience the EuroVartoVision.

Tickets will soon be available, for more information click here. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the AIDS research.
